{"id":16226,"date":"2020-08-17T11:07:35","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T06:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=16226"},"modified":"2020-08-17T11:07:35","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T06:07:35","slug":"high-speed-internet-restored-in-2-districts-of-kashmir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/16226","title":{"rendered":"High-speed internet restored in 2 districts of Kashmir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir ordered high-speed internet to be restored in two of the disputed region\u2019s 20 districts on a \u201ctrial basis\u201d from Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>High-speed internet services were restored in Ganderbal district in the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley and Udhampur district in Hindu-majority Jammu after a committee formed on the orders of the Indian Supreme Court recommended \u201ccalibrated easing of internet restrictions in comparatively less sensitive geographical areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Udhampur, where the Indian army\u2019s Northern Command Headquarters is located, is \u201cmilitancy free.\u201d The district has a population of 550,000 out of Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s total population of 12.5 million. Compared to the rest of the Kashmir Valley, Ganderbal, with a population of 300,000, has witnessed fewer militancy-related incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ctrial\u201d will last until Sept. 8, and high-speed internet will be available on postpaid mobile phones only, according to the government order. The remaining districts will have to make do with low-speed internet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will update my phones. This is the first thing I intend to do once it is restored,\u201d Sheikh Anees, a journalist based in Ganderbal, told Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n<p>High-speed internet had been cut off since last August, when India revoked the semi-autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir, divided it into two federally ruled territories and imposed a complete lockdown and communications blackout.<\/p>\n<p>When the Supreme Court stepped in, the Indian government only restored mobile internet services in January &#8212; first in Hindu-dominated Jammu and then in Muslim-majority regions of Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>However, only government-authorized \u201cwhitelisted\u201d websites were accessible.
