{"id":15953,"date":"2020-07-28T11:04:28","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T06:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=15953"},"modified":"2020-07-28T11:04:28","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T06:04:28","slug":"britain-unveils-national-weight-loss-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/15953","title":{"rendered":"Britain unveils national weight loss campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LONDON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The British government on Monday announced its plan to tackle obesity in order to better protect the population against the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>The measures include a ban on TV and online advertisement for food high in fat, sugar, and salt before 9:00 p.m. local time to reduce children\u2019s exposure to them, ending \u201cbuy one get one free\u201d deals on unhealthy foods, banning unhealthy goods being placed at checkouts and entrances in-store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalories to be displayed on menus to help people make healthier choices when eating out \u2013 while alcoholic drinks could soon have to list hidden \u2018liquid calories\u2019,\u201d a government statement said, adding doctors will be prescribing exercises such as cycling to help keep people fit.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted in a video on his Twitter that he was \u201ctoo fat\u201d when he was hospitalized with COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, he has lost weight and every morning goes on runs with his dog.<\/p>\n<p>He said that government ministers would not be \u201cexcessively bossy or nannying\u201d in their campaign to cut Britain\u2019s waistline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I went into ICU, when I was really ill, I was way overweight. I am only about five foot ten and I was too fat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI start the day by going for a run with the dog &#8211; quite a gentle run but actually getting faster and faster now as I get fitter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Protecting National Health Service (NHS)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other thing obviously is if you can get your weight down a bit and protect your health you will also be protecting the NHS,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing now with our better health strategy is just trying to help people a little bit to bring their weight down &#8211; not in an excessively bossy or nannying way, I hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Britain is often referred to as the \u201cfat man of Europe,\u201d with 63% of adults in England being overweight or obese, and a third of children leaving primary school overweight or obese.<\/p>\n<p>Obesity-related illnesses cost the NHS \u00a36 billion ($7.72 billion) a year. The more overweight a person is, the more at risk they are of coronavirus too.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 8% of critically ill COVID-19 patients in intensive care units are morbidly obese, compared with 2.9% in the general population.<\/p>\n<p>According to Anadolu news, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: \u201cIf everyone who is overweight lost five pounds it could save the NHS over \u00a3100 million over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd more importantly, given the link between obesity and coronavirus, losing weight could be lifesaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England, said in a statement: \u201cThe main reason we put on weight is because of what we eat and drink, but being more active is important too.
