{"id":15497,"date":"2020-07-01T11:27:54","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T06:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=15497"},"modified":"2020-07-01T12:01:50","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T07:01:50","slug":"illegal-settlements-being-built-in-west-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/15497","title":{"rendered":"Illegal settlements being built in West Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>RAMALLAH, <\/strong><strong>GAZA City,\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Palestine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jewish settlers began building illegal settlements Tuesday in the south of the occupied West Bank after seizing Palestinian lands.<\/p>\n<p>Eyewitnesses said a large number of settlers raided the northern part of Halhul village in Hebron.<\/p>\n<p>While Palestinians are not allowed to enter the area, which was declared a &#8220;military zone\u201d by the Israeli army, Jewish settlers began preparations for construction after planting Israeli flags on the site.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said he would annex all settlement blocs and the Jordan Valley as of July 1 under an agreement with his rival-turned-ally Benny Gantz, the head of the Blue and White coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinian officials have threatened to abolish bilateral agreements with Israel if it goes ahead with the annexation, which would further undermine the two-state solution.<\/p>\n<p>The annexation stems from US President Donald Trump\u2019s &#8220;Deal of the Century&#8221; which was announced on Jan. 28. It refers to Jerusalem as \u201cIsrael\u2019s undivided capital\u201d and recognizes Israeli sovereignty over large parts of the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The plan calls for the establishment of a Palestinian state in the form of an archipelago connected through bridges and tunnels.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinian officials say that under the US plan, Israel will annex 30%-40% of the West Bank, including all of East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 650,000 Israeli Jews currently live in more than 100 settlements built since 1967, when Israel occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinians want these territories\u00a0 along with the Gaza Strip for the establishment of a future Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>International law views both the West Bank and East Jerusalem as &#8220;occupied territories&#8221; and considers all Jewish settlement-building activity there as illegal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile on other side in GAZA, Palestinian analysts have warned, Israel\u2019s annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank will lead to the outbreak of violence in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>Israel is set to hold a Cabinet vote on July 1 to annex major settlement blocs and the Jordan Valley in the West Bank under US President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cdeal of the century\u201d plan.<\/p>\n<p>The land grab is opposed by the Palestinians, who threatened to abolish bilateral agreements with Israel if it went ahead with the annexation, which will further undermine the two-state solution.<\/p>\n<p>The UN earlier warned that the Israeli annexation of Palestinian land would lead to the outbreak of conflict and instability in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Palestinian resistance group Hamas described the Israeli annexation plan as a \u201cdeclaration of war\u201d against the Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Israeli army said two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israel without causing any damage. No Palestinian group has claimed responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rocket fire was a serious message on the repercussions of the annexation,\u201d Palestinian journalist Khaldoun Barghouti told Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n<p>He said Israeli officials called for dealing seriously with threats against the annexation. \u201cThe violent Israeli response to the rocket fire also carries a message to Gaza about any possible escalation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barghouti expected that the response of the Gazans to the annexation might range between resuming the weekly protests along Gaza\u2019s buffer zone and military escalation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is hard for Hamas and other factions to remain silent in light of what is happening in the West Bank,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Open war<br \/>\nPalestinian analyst Wadei Abunassar warned that any military escalation in Gaza could develop into a war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is hard to predict the possible scenario of escalation in Gaza, which could escalate into an open war,\u201d he told Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Previous conflicts between Israel and Hamas were not planned. They all started as an escalation and developed into a war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said failure to reach an understanding between Hamas and Israel on issues such as ceasefire and lifting the siege could cause any escalation to turn into a war. &#8220;Any limited escalation could turn into a war if mediators failed to contain it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Adnan Abu Amer, a Palestinian expert in Israeli affairs, said Gaza has always been a \u201cmain front\u201d in responding to any Israeli aggression.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gaza may respond to the Israeli annexation plan, because its capabilities are greater than the besieged West Bank,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, believes that any response to the annexation that emanates from inside the West Bank would have a greater impact than Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scene of confrontation will be in the West Bank, while Gaza will be ready for support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RAMALLAH, GAZA City,\u00a0 Palestine Jewish settlers began building illegal settlements Tuesday in the south of the occupied West Bank after seizing Palestinian lands.
