New York City will run out of critical resources to combat the coronavirus in a little more than a week, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday.<\/p>\n
As the\u00a0epicenter for the country\u2019s outbreak, the city will be in dire need of staffing, supplies and medical equipment like masks, gowns and ventilators by next Sunday, de Blasio said during an evening briefing.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter next Sunday, April 5, is when I get much worried about everything we\u2019re going to need,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n
De Blasio said he stressed that \u201ccrucial\u201d date to President Trump during a phone call between the two on Friday, urging more outside help.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are not where we need to be yet in terms of support from Washington,\u201d de Blasio said.<\/p>\n
Several \u201cessential\u201d workers have already died from the virus, and de Blasio warned that more will fall.<\/p>\n
\u201cSadly we are sure to lose more of our colleagues, and that\u2019s painful,\u201d de Blasio went on. \u201cSome of the most senior members of the NYPD leadership have been afflicted by this disease and are fighting it now.\u201d<\/p>\n
At least\u00a0two MTA workers have died\u00a0from the virus, as well as\u00a0Dennis Dickson, an NYPD employee; Irene Weiss, a city DOT worker;\u00a0David Perez, a Correction investigator,\u00a0Kious Kelly, a nurse at Mount Sinai West; and\u00a0Dezann Romain, a Brooklyn school principal.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u00a0cannot have an economic recovery\u00a0if our health care system isn\u2019t working,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cYou cannot have an economic recovery if hundreds or thousands of people are dying.\u201d<\/p>\n
Deliveries of supplies were making their way to city hospitals Friday, de Blasio said. Twenty trucks will be delivering 20,000 N95 respiratory masks; 40,000 gowns; 50,000 face shields and 10,000 boxes of gloves.<\/p>\n
Trucks tomorrow will deliver another 800,000 respirator masks and two million more surgical masks.<\/p>\n
But even those supplies will run dry by next Sunday, according to the mayor.<\/p>\n
