{"id":13484,"date":"2020-03-09T12:03:15","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T07:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=13484"},"modified":"2020-03-09T12:04:05","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T07:04:05","slug":"public-schools-and-university-cancel-classes-intended-to-prevent-from-spreading-amid-coronavirus-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/13484","title":{"rendered":"Public Schools, and University cancel classes intended to prevent from spreading amid coronavirus concerns\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Scarsdale Public School District in Westchester decided to cancel classes until March 18 upon learning Sunday that a middle school teacher tested positive for coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>The impacted faculty member is exhibiting mild illness, and the District\u2019s response is designed to demonstrate vigilance and recognition of individuals who may be immuno-compromised, the district wrote in a message posted to their website.<\/p>\n<p>During the cancellation, the district will contact families who may have come into contact with the infected teacher, disinfect their buildings, and develop a system to enable \u201ce-learning\u201d beginning March 16, the district said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on Manhattan\u2019s Upper East Side, the elite private all-girls Brearley School also canceled classes this week because a student\u2019s parent is being tested for the virus, according to a Sunday email sent to parents from the school\u2019s head, Jane Foley Fried.<\/p>\n<p>The Brearley School is at least the third posh Manhattan prep school to\u00a0 close from the coronavirus since last week.<\/p>\n<p>The Brearley parent, who was exposed to the coronavirus, was tested Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither the parent nor members of the family have any symptoms of illness since the exposure,\u201d an email from the school said.<\/p>\n<p>Classes at the Brearley School are expected to resume after Spring Break on March 30.<\/p>\n<p>The school said they plan to use the additional week off before the planned break to test the functionality of their virtual classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Columbia University is canceling two days of classes this week because a person at the school is under quarantine from coronavirus exposure, action is intended to prevent from spreading, the university\u2019s president announced in a Sunday email.<\/p>\n<p>I am writing this evening to notify everyone that, because a member of our community has been quarantined as a result of exposure to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have decided to suspend classes on Monday and Tuesday, Columbia\u2019s president, Lee Bollinger, wrote in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Bollinger noted that the person under quarantine has not yet\u00a0 diagnosed with the deadly virus. They did not say if it was a student or staff member. From Wednesday until the start of Spring Break on Friday, classes will be taught remotely, Bollinger said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hofstra University on Long Island canceled this week\u2019s classes when a student reported flu-like symptoms Sunday after attending a conference with a person who later tested positive for coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>The student is being tested and kept in isolation, the university announced in a statement.
