New York\u2019s count of coronavirus cases rose to 11 on Wednesday, as officials revealed that nine people linked to an infected Westchester attorney tested positive and some 1,000 people were asked to self-isolate.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the most complex case we have in terms of the number of interactions, Governor Cuomo stated in afternoon press briefing in Albany announcing the most recent batch of confirmed cases.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the lawyer identified by sources as Lawrence Garbuz, 50, of New Rochelle on Tuesday became the second Empire State resident to test positive for the infection. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tests on Garbuz\u2019s son a 20-year-old undergrad at Yeshiva University\u2019s\u00a0Washington Heights campus his 14-year-old daughter and his wife, Adina, all came back positive, Cuomo revealed Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also infected was a neighbor who drove Garbuz to a doctor\u2019s office when he first feared he might be have the disease, Cuomo said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In another event held hours later, Cuomo confirmed the infection of an additional five people connected to Garbuz: a friend, as well as that man\u2019s wife, two sons and daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to Garbuz and the nine people tied to him, a\u00a039-year-old Manhattan health-care worker\u00a0who\u2019d recently traveled to hard-hit Iran became the state\u2019s first confirmed case when she was tested positive on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Garbuz,\u00a0who was underlying respiratory infection, hospitalized at NewYork-Presbyterian\/Columbia Medical Center in stable condition, while the others are well enough to stay home, albeit under quarantine, Cuomo said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The city and state have separate laws governing the quarantining of people with transmittable diseases and the isolation of those who exposed, according to an official Public Health Legal Manual published in 2011. There are no rules governing voluntary compliance, which the manual calls the chosen method of keeping people from infecting others. But if people refuse to follow directions, the city health commissioner authority to order them restricted for up to five days with no restriction on where and without a court order, the manual says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside the city, that decision falls to local boards of health.<\/span><\/p>\n

Breaking involuntary confinement can result in fines of between $200 and $2,000 per day in the city and up to $2,000 per incident elsewhere. Violations that pose an immediate danger to the public can also result in arrest and prosecution on a violation charge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those patients are among about 1,000 total people who asked to self-isolate as disease detectives thoroughly retrace the steps of the confirmed cases to look for those they may have infected, Cuomo said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authorities with local health departments conducted spot checks on confirmed cases, according to authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the uptown Yeshiva University campus where Garbuz\u2019s son lived was temporarily closed on Wednesday along with the private Jewish SAR Academy in Riverdale attended by Garbuz\u2019s daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seven colleagues and an intern at Garbuz\u2019s law office, near Grand Central, also are being tested, Mayor de Blasio said in press briefing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously this is a crisis that will be with us, I think it\u2019s fair to say, not for weeks but for months, said Hizzoner.<\/span><\/p>\n
