The wedding dress industry is in turmoil over the deadly outbreak because 90 percent of gowns are either made in China or include materials that are, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been in business 20 years, and I\u2019ve never seen anything like this. It\u2019s really bad, said Liz Sellassie, the owner of Designer Loft NYC in the Garment District.\u00a0Designers are writing to me every day saying \u2018this order is delayed, that order is delayed.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Some Chinese factories are shut down and others are operating at a snail\u2019s pace amid the global crisis that\u2019s\u00a0killed more than 2,800.\u00a0Boats are leaving Chinese ports less than 10 percent full, and dozens of shipping\u2019s are cancelled media houses reported.<\/p>\n<p>While the Chinese bunker down and tend to their ill, back in New York brides are waiting with bated breath for severely delayed orders to arrive before their big days. Others with fast-approaching nuptials are scrambling for backup dresses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll those procrastinators out there who like to wait until the last minute to lose weight, they need to know, now is not the time to wait, because we don\u2019t know if the delays are going to stop or get worse,\u201d Sellassie said.<\/p>\n<p>Made-to-order dresses typically delivered in three months are now slated to arrive in six, sales people said.<\/p>\n<p>I had four brides this weekend two with a May wedding and two in July and I can\u2019t get them the dresses they want. I\u2019m not comfortable taking the order, Sellasie said.<\/p>\n<p>Two more local brides, one with a wedding in April and another in June, are still waiting for their dresses that were supposed to be here at the end of January, said two wedding planners.<\/p>\n<p>The salon is making backup plans looking into other options for her,\u201d Marie Danielle Vil-Young of A Votre Events said of the April bride. \u201cYou can imagine it\u2019s very disappointing and upsetting, but this is not something we can control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dress sellers said they\u2019re operating under a veil of uncertainty as manufacturers provide \u201cvague\u201d updates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery week we get an update saying, \u2018We think the factories are opening up next week,\u2019 \u201d said the owner of Midtown mega store RK Bridal, Candy Kimmel. \u201cWe are hearing a lot of inconsistencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She estimated that of the 3,000 dresses her store carries, one-third have ordering delays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody has their hands in China,\u201d she said of dress-makers.<\/p>\n<p>For brides looking for a quickie I-do, Kimmel said they\u2019re stuck with a drastically limited selection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have 400-500 new gowns in the back, and we will sell them off the rack when a girl is really desperate,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cIf she\u2019s getting married in two weeks, we get her a dress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One bride came all the way from Jacksonville, Fla., to shop at Manhattan\u2019s famed Klein feld Bridal but worries she could have to settle for an off-the-rack gown if it doesn\u2019t arrive in time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, yeah, it\u2019s nerve wracking. Because I know that there are problems bringing people back into the factories already shortage on staff and being closed for so long,\u201d said Catherine Love, who said she works in the fashion industry and has experienced the corona virus ordering delays at her own job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s already a stressful day.
