Shirreffs retired from the NYPD last year. He had served the department for 23 years and was last assigned to the NYPD Driver Education and Training Unit, which is headquartered at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the NYPD nor the Nassau County Police Department returned requests for comment. A funeral service for Shirreff is set for next week in Farmingdale, L.I.<\/p>\n<p>Word of his death surfaced as a funeral was held in West Babylon, L.I. for NYPD Detective Paul Federico, who died by suicide on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Read also<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/queens-off-duty-nypd-detective-hangs-self-at-mothers-home\/\">Queens, Off-duty NYPD detective hangs self at mothers home<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-item-type=\"depthscroll\" data-item-id=\"depth_scroll_middle\" data-item-number=\"middle\">Federico, who lost a kidney to a 9\/11-related illness and had recently been assigned to the police commissioner\u2019s liaison office, hanged himself in his mother\u2019s home in Middle Village, Queens, cops said.<\/p>\n<p>The detective had recently been stripped of his gun and shield, the NYPD said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had attempted to get help, [for] his medical conditions and [for] other issues, personal issues that he was having,\u201d NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>Federico\u2019s suicide is the first of the year involving an active-duty NYPD officer.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 10 active NYPD cops killed themselves, about twice the number in a typical year. Police responded with a series of measures, including training 227 peer support officers to help troubled cops in times of crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the department partnered with New York-Presbyterian Hospital to form Finest Care, which connects despondent cops with psychologists or psychiatrists.
