{"id":11766,"date":"2019-11-14T14:00:03","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T09:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=11766"},"modified":"2019-11-14T14:00:03","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T09:00:03","slug":"melbourne-zoo-welcomes-first-baby-koala-in-eight-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/11766","title":{"rendered":"Melbourne Zoo Welcomes First Baby Koala in Eight Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable\">Australia&#8217;s Melbourne Zoo is celebrating the arrival of its newest koala &#8211; an unnamed five-month-old joey &#8211; the first to be born at the zoo in more than eight years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The baby has just started to peek out from its mother&#8217;s pouch where it has been growing for the past few months.<\/p>\n<p>The zoo&#8217;s Australian Bush keeper Maddy Jamieson said the joey and first-time koala mum Karri were doing well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;Karri has been a fantastic mum so far,&#8221; Jamieson said. &#8220;She is feeding the joey really, really well and she is looking after her and doing everything that she is supposed to be doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Karri was the last koala to be born at the zoo.<\/p>\n<p>Her joey&#8217;s gender is not yet known, and it is not expected to emerge fully from her pouch for about a month, when it will start to eat the gum leaves that make up the adult koala&#8217;s diet.<\/p>\n<p>Koalas have been listed as a vulnerable species in many parts of\u00a0 Australia \u00a0with their population under threat from habitat destruction and disease.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia&#8217;s Melbourne Zoo is celebrating the arrival of its newest koala &#8211; an unnamed five-month-old joey &#8211; the first to be born at the zoo in more than eight years.
