{"id":11648,"date":"2019-11-11T09:49:06","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T04:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=11648"},"modified":"2019-11-11T09:49:06","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T04:49:06","slug":"cyclone-bulbul-kills-22-across-india-and-bangladesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/11648","title":{"rendered":"Cyclone Bulbul Kills 22 Across India and Bangladesh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cyclone Bulbul has ripped through coastal areas of Bangladesh and India, killing at least\u00a0 22 people while more than two million others were forced to spend a night in storm shelters.<\/p>\n<p>The cyclone packed winds of up to 120 kilometres (75 miles) per hour when it hit late Saturday, closing ports and airports in both countries.<\/p>\n<p>Ayesha Akter, an emergency official in Bangladesh, confirmed 12 people had died in the storm, adding that she feared the death toll will rise until Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bangladesh\u2019s Health Directorate report casualties have been reported from eight districts in the country&#8217;s southern coastline. Some 226,000 people have been affected by the cyclone and large swathes of cultivable land inundated, the country&#8217;s Disaster Management and Relief Ministry said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11651\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bulbul-1200-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11651\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bulbul-1200-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bulbul-1200-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bulbul-1200-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bulbul-1200-1-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At Amrabati village at Fraserganj, huge damage caused due the cyclon Bul Bul landfall on 9th November in Sagar island and adjecent area in South 24 parganas district.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are increasing concerns after two fishing boats carrying more than 30 men failed to return, an official in Bangladesh&#8217;s Bhola district said.<\/p>\n<p>Around 1,200 tourists, most of them Bangladeshi, were stuck on St Martin&#8217;s Island, part of Cox&#8217;s Bazar district, an official told the Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh&#8217;s two biggest ports, Mongla and Chittagong, were closed and flights into Chittagong airport were stopped.<\/p>\n<p>In coastal Khulna, the worst-hit district in Bangladesh, trees swayed violently and were ripped from the ground in the fierce storms, blocking roads and hampering access to the area.<\/p>\n<p>Troops were sent to coastal districts while tens of thousands of volunteers went door-to-door and used loudspeakers to urge people to evacuate their villages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/w_55612814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11652\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/w_55612814.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"920\" height=\"613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/w_55612814.jpg 920w, https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/w_55612814-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/w_55612814-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, at least 10 people were killed in eastern Indian state of West Bengal, news agency Press Trust of India reported citing officials.<\/p>\n<p>Close to 150,000 people have been evacuated from West Bengal&#8217;s low-lying coastal areas, local media reported.\u00a0 Moreover, some 60,000 people were evacuated from their homes while flights in and out of Kolkata airport were suspended for 12 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to West Bengal&#8217;s Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee to discuss the situation in the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Reviewed the situation in the wake of cyclone conditions and heavy rain in parts of Eastern India. Spoke to WB CM [chief minister of West Bengal] regarding the situation arising due to Cyclone Bulbul. Assured all possible assistance from the Centre.
