The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution to formally proceed with the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
The measure details how the inquiry will move into a more public phase. It was not a vote on whether the president should be removed from office.<\/p>\n
This was the first test of support in the Democratic-controlled House for the impeachment process.<\/p>\n
The White House condemned the vote, which passed along party lines.<\/p>\n
National Security Council\u00a0 official\u00a0 Tim Morrison testified before congress, affirming\u00a0that Trump sought a quid pro quo, while insisting that there was nothing illegal about it. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers said they were vindicated by his testimony.<\/p>\n
A\u00a0 majority of Americans\u00a0\u2014 61% \u2014 say Trump violates democratic institutions and forms.<\/p>\n
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is the most senior elected Democrat, said the procedures would allow lawmakers to decide whether to impeach Trump “based on the truth”.<\/p>\n
“I don’t know why the Republicans are afraid of the truth,” she added.<\/p>\n
In the first stage, the House Intelligence Committee will hold public hearings in the coming weeks. It will have the right to make public transcripts of depositions taken in private.<\/p>\n
In the second stage, a public report on the findings will be sent to the House Judiciary Committee which will conduct its own proceedings and report on “such resolutions, articles of impeachment, or other recommendations as it deems proper”.<\/p>\n
President Trump’s lawyers will be allowed to take part in the Judiciary Committee stage.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, \u00a0Donald Trump has announced he will make Florida his permanent home instead of Trump Tower in New York.<\/p>\n
He said he had been badly treated by New York’s political leaders, despite having paid millions of dollars in tax.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump was born in New York but has increasingly spent more time at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach.<\/p>\n
The president, a Republican, has been at odds with New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio – both Democrats.<\/p>\n
They both welcomed the news that the president was Florida-bound.<\/p>\n
“Don’t let the door hit you on the way out or whatever,”\u00a0 tweeted Mr De Blasio.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump has never released his tax returns and refuses to disclose personal tax information.<\/p>\n
