US President Donald Trump \u00a0on Monday imposed sanctions on Turkey over Ankara’s\u00a0 military operation in northeast Syria, and called for an immediate ceasefire.<\/p>\n
In his sanctions announcement, Trump said he was halting negotiations on a $100 billion trade deal with Turkey and raising steel tariffs back up to 50 percent.The US has sanctioned two Turkish ministries and three senior government officials.<\/p>\n
The US\u00a0 Treasury published a statement,\u00a0 which said that action was taken against Turkey’s defence, interior\u00a0 and energy ministries.<\/p>\n
In a statement announcing the move, Trump said he was “fully prepared to swiftly destroy Turkey’s economy if Turkish leaders continue down this dangerous and destructive path”.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump also phoned his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to demand an immediate truce, Vice-President Mike Pence said.<\/p>\n
Mr Pence said he would travel to the region “as quickly as possible”.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in Turkey\u2019s anti-terrorist operation in northern Syria, 7 Syrian National Army (SNA) soldiers\u00a0 \u00a0have been martyred and 51 wounded over the last two days, according to sources on the ground in the area of operations.<\/p>\n
Since Oct. 9, the beginning of the operation, a total of 23 SNA soldiers have been martyred and 108 injured.<\/p>\n
So far two district centers, a town, and dozens of village have been liberated from PKK\/YPG terrorists.<\/p>\n
Clashes between PKK\/YPG terrorists and SNA troops in Operation Peace Spring are continuing in the towns of Ras al-Ayn and Tal Abyad, east of the Euphrates River in northern Syria.<\/p>\n
Turkey on Oct. 9 launched Operation Peace Spring to eliminate terrorists from northern Syria in order to secure Turkey\u2019s borders, aid in the safe return of Syrian refugees, and ensure Syria\u2019s territorial integrity.<\/p>\n
Syrian state media said Russian-backed government forces had entered the strategic town of Manbij, inside the area where Turkey wants to create a “safe zone”.<\/p>\n
