{"id":10268,"date":"2019-10-04T10:22:23","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T05:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=10268"},"modified":"2019-10-04T10:24:01","modified_gmt":"2019-10-04T05:24:01","slug":"iraqs-pm-calls-for-talks-as-thousands-of-protesters-defy-curfew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/10268","title":{"rendered":"Iraq&#8217;s PM Calls for Talks as Thousands of Protesters Defy Curfew"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iraq&#8217;s\u00a0 Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has called for dialogue after a third consecutive day of deadly anti-government protests in the capital, Baghdad, and several southern cities.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0 \u00a0local media Abdul Mahdi&#8217;s office said the prime minister was &#8220;continuing contacts&#8221; with protesters in a bid to end the political crisis and &#8220;return to normal life&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In a rare televised address, Mr Mahdi stuck a conciliatory tone as protesters demanded his resignation. The PM said he would respond to their concerns, but warned there was no &#8220;magic solution&#8221; to Iraq&#8217;s problems.<\/p>\n<p>Calling on lawmakers to support him, Mr Mahdi promised to pass a new law granting poor families a basic income.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am reaffirming that your voice was heard before you even started protesting,&#8221; Mr Mahdi said. But he added that it would take time to bring about change.<\/p>\n<p>The protests, which appear to lack any organised leadership, are the largest since Mr Mahdi became prime minister a year ago. as 4,000 protesters rallied in the Baghdad, defying a government-enforced curfew to call again for improved services, more jobs and an end to widespread\u00a0 corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of protesters clashed with riot police in Iraq\u00b4s capital and across the south on Thursday, the third day of mass rallies that have left 31 dead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iraq&#8217;s\u00a0 Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has called for dialogue after a third consecutive day of deadly anti-government protests in the capital, Baghdad, and several southern cities.
