QUETTA: At least seven Balochistan Constabulary personnel martyred as a result of a suicide blast near the Balochistan Assembly in Quetta on Tuesday night.
The blast took place on GPO Chowk, some 300 metres away from the Assembly. Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed the responsibility.
Police say the suicide bomber targeted the police truck hours after CM Balochistan Sanaullah Zehri stepped down to avoid the no-confidence vote.
“A suicide bomber was believed to have walked up to the truck and blown himself up,” A unanimous police official told Tribune.
As many as six constables died on the spot while 16 others were hurt, including 8 police personnel.
After visiting the blast site, Inspector General (IG) Police Mozzam Jah Ansari told media, “Due to the assembly session, the vicinity of Balochistan Assembly building was completely cordoned off and heavy contingents of security personnel were deployed.”
Over 900 police and Balochistan Constabulary personnel were deployed to guard the Balochistan Assembly session.
The session was called to conduct a no-confidence vote against Zehri’s government. It was, however, cancelled after Sanaullah Zehri tendered resignation to Governor Balochistan Mehmood Khan Achakzai.
A recent security report released by Pakistan Institute of Policy Studies (PIPS) claimed that TTP is still a potent threat to the country’s peace.
