AUCKLAND: High-flying Australia have defeated young-looking New Zealand by 19 runs in the final of trans-Tasman T20 tri-series in Auckland, New Zealand.
Australia remained unbeaten throughout the tournament winning 5 matches on the trot.
New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first in the biggest game of the series.
Australia’s bowling brigade hardly lent a foot wrong, taking early Kiwi wickets to restrict the hosts to just 150 in a small ground of Auckland.
Ross Taylor (43) was the highest run-getter for New Zealand.
Spinner Ashton Agar picked three wickets in eight balls whereas pace duo Kane Richardson and Andrew Tye bagged two scalps apiece.
Australian batsmen took a flying start in pursuit of a small chase, they were 55/0 in first 6 overs.
Skipper David Warner (25 off 23) Aaron Finch (18 off 13 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (20 off 18 balls) were the three wickets Aussies lost during the chase.
They were 121/3 in 14.4 overs when the rains halted play. This was when D/L method came into play and reduced the target to 103. Since Australia were already ahead of the target, they won the game by 19 runs.
