At least 12 people have died and 30 are missing after a tourist boat capsized in the Godavari river in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
According to the officials, the boat was carrying around 61 people including 11 crew members , all of them Indian nationals, was on its way to a popular tourist spot on Sunday when it collided with a large rock.
A search operation was underway to try to find the missing people. Twenty-four people have been rescued so far while 25 others are missing, home minister Sucharita said.
Authorities told that the the collision occurred in a “remote forest area” with inadequate communication facilities, making it a vulnerable area.
The tourism minister confirmed that the tourist boat had been operating without a licence.
Apart from tourists, residents in the area depend on boats and ferries to travel between villages on the banks of the Godavari.
