WASHINGTON: The United States has declared Siddharta Dhar, an Indian origin man from the UK, and a senior commander of Islamic States as a global terrorist.
A statement from the US State Department said, Dhar, skipped police bail in the UK and fleed to Syria with family in 2014. There he joined IS and is now called “New Jihadi John.”
The State Department has declared him as the Specially Designated Global Terrorists under Section 1(b) of Executive Order. This order imposes sanctions on foreign persons determined to have committed, or pose a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism.
Dhar is believed to be the masked man who appeared in a viral video of the execution of several prisoners ISIS accused of spying for the UK.
The video was released in January 2016.
The statement reveals that Dhar was a leading member of now-defunct terrorist organisation Al-Muhajiroun before travelling to Syria. He is considered to have replaced ISIS executioner Mohammad Emwazi, also known as “Jihadi John”, it said.
