According to the local reports, the building was up to 100 years old in the Dongri area of southern Mumbai. Some 15 families are believed to have been living in the building.

However the reason of collapse is not clear yet but recent monsoon flooding may also have been a factor.

Two teams from India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF),  local volunteers, the fire department and police scoured the rubble for survivors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences to the victims’ families, describing the incident as “anguishing”.

It’s estimated disasters such as this kill about 2,000 people a year in India. Poor construction standards and dilapidated buildings are often blamed.
