DUBAI: Newcomers Multan Sultans have started their Pakistan Super League (PSL) campaign with a massive 7-wicket win against the defending champions Peshawar Zalmi in the first match.
The match was played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Sultans opted to field first after winning the toss.
Mohammad Irfan removed both openers Kamran Akmal (0) and Tamim Iqbal (11) cheaply.
Spinners increased the pressure on Zalmi but Mohammad Hafeez’s brilliant fifty followed by skipper Daren Sammy’s baton charge down the order helped them post 151/6 in 20 overs.
Sammy scored quick 29 off 11 balls.
Irfan took 2 wickets for Sultans.
Sultans took a cautious start, losing Ahmed Shehzad for 0.
But Kumar Sangakkara built the innings with Sohaib Maqsood (21).
After the fall of Sohaib, Malik continued to support Sanga. The pair kept the scoreboard in check.
Sangakkara fell short of the chase but scored a gritty 46-ball fifty before being out on 57.
Karen Pollard (19) paired with Malik (42*) finished the game with seven wickets in hand and five balls remaining.
