US Drone Strike Kills Haqqani Commander in Kurram Agency

KURRAM AGENCY: A US drone strike in Speen Thal Dapah Mamozai area near the Pak-Afghan border killed a Haqqani Network commander.

Political Administration has confirmed that Ahsan Aka Khwarai and two of his companions died in a drone strike on Wednesday evening.

Local sources from the Orakzai Agency said the missiles strike targeted a Haqqani Network hideout.

Pakistan condemns a drone strike in Kurram Agency carried out by the Resolute Support Mission (RSM) this morning, which targeted an Afghan refugee camp.

“Pakistan has continued to emphasize to the US the importance of sharing actionable intelligence so that appropriate action is taken against terrorists by our forces within our territory,” a statement from Pakistan Foreign Office said.

The statement further mentioned that Pakistan has also been stressing the need for early repatriation of Afghan refugees.  Their presence in Pakistan helps Afghan terrorists to melt and morph among them, it added.Such unilateral actions, as that of today, are detrimental to the spirit of cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism.

These strikes have increased after Pak-US relationship turned sour following Trump’s Afghan policy.

On January 17, in the first drone strike of the year, one man was seriously injured in Kurram Agency’s Badshah Kot area near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

In December last year, two suspected militants were killed by a drone strike in the Mata Sangar area of Kurram Agency.

The Blame Game

The US has long accused Pakistan of a double play and of patronizing militant groups involved in attacks on US forces.

The US President in his new year tweet accused Pakistan of providing safe havens to militants and announced to halt its security aid.
