LAHORE: A Pakistan’s anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday awarded death sentence to the rapist and murders of a seven-year-old Zainab on four counts.
Lahore ATC’s Judge Sheikh Ahmad Sajjad announced the verdict today afternoon. The verdict had been reserved on Wednesday after a marathon trial within 72 hours.
Prosecutor General Punjab Ehtisham Qadir and Deputy Prosecutor General Punjab Hafiz Muhammad Asghar were in attendance in the court to hear the verdict.
The judge ruled that prosecution proved its case against the murdered being any shadows of doubts.
The court also handed down the culprit 32-year term. The judge said that the convict can appeal against the conviction in the High Court within 15 days.
Prosecutor General Punjab Ehtisham Qadir told reporters the convict has not yet decided on appeal against the sentencing.
Earlier, the court had reserved verdict after hearing arguments of defence and prosecution, besides recording statements of all 56 witnesses.
The ATC conducted the hearing on daily basis inside Kot Lakhpat Jail, following the order of Lahore High Court.
Zainab murder case is the fastest trial in Pakistan judiciary’s history.
On February 14, Imran Ali’s lawyer disassociated himself from the case, saying that after accused’s confession, his conscience does not permit him to represent the accused
